Rick Astley Is My Homeboy

Tuesday, March 25th, 2008

Here’s a 30-minute mix I slapped together 2 weekends ago…. Anytime I have 50 Cent, Rick Astley, Dr. Dre, Armin van Helden and the Outfield in the same mix, you know it’s going to be awesome.

So enjoy!

Nirvana Smells a Little More Electro

Monday, March 24th, 2008

In my random blog browsings for the good musics, I came across this lovely gem: a remix of Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit.” Now, I’ve heard a couple of mash-ups of SLTS before, none of which have made me want to take a second listen. This remix, however, is sick.

Give me a house/electro set, and I’ll definitely drop it. Break out the lumberjack flannel!

Oh Snap! Kelz Foreshadowing!?

Wednesday, March 12th, 2008

I’m just kind of minding my own business… doing late night web and music work… chillin’ with the iTunes running in the background… when one of my all-time faves starts playing –

R. Kelly’s “Bump N Grind (Old School Remix)”

What’s amazing is out of the whole song, my mind focused on one line on the song:

So show me some ID before I get knee deep into you

Maybe I’m trippin’ out because it’s 3:30am and I really should be sleeping, but do you think R. Kelly saw his fetishes catching up to him one day? Just a thought. If you didn’t know, this song came out in 1993. Maybe his musical genius is far more extended than I originally thought.

In any case, it’s still a great song. Grove with me, baby.

Back to my red-eye work.

Wiz Khalifa - “Say Yeah”

Tuesday, March 11th, 2008

I’ll have to admit - when I first heard this song I was appalled. Hip hop and trance… never thought it would work.

House and hip hop sort of works when you think about it - bass heavy, sexual, similar samples. Miami Bass, among my all-time favorite genres (probably after New Jack Swing and West Coast Rap), is considered a faction of house. But trance, with it’s ecstasy and glow sticks, I honestly never thought they would mesh together.

Back in high school when trance started catching on in the mainstream the hip hop heads would always look down upon hip hop (i.e. “What the fuck is that shit? Turn that shit off!”).

Alice Deejay’s “Better Off Alone” was the shit back then, despite what my hip hop friends think, and that might be the main reason I actually like “Say Yeah.” The obvious “Better Off Alone” sample is front in center with Wiz screaming things about money and honeys. It’s a beat where I’m telling myself, “why didn’t I think of that?,” but then again, I probably would have never taken it seriously if I did make something like this.

Anyway, enjoy the awesome track.
