Grand Popo Football Club

Thursday, August 14th, 2008

Courtesy of the peeps at BIGSTEREO, I was able to check out this snazzy little video from the Grand Popo Football Club (isn’t that just the most awesome name?).

Grand Popo Football Club are a French electronic music group of Nicolas Errèra and Ariel Wizman, best known for their 2001 hit song “Men Are Not Nice Guys” and to a lesser extent their underground dance hit “Each Finger Has An Attitude”. They also released an album entitled Shampoo Victims. The band name originated when Wizman went on a trip to Grand Popo, a village in the African nation of Benin, and “we said to ourselves that there had to be a football club in this town, and that if not, we’d have to do something about it, urgently”

“My Territory” comes off their sophomore album, and the video is awesome. Walking lips, exploding navels, I don’t know how to explain it but the video oddly enough fits the song. Pure crazyness, I say. Crazyness.

You knew this was coming.

I present to you the “Everyone Nose (Remix)” music video by N*E*R*D, featuring Kanye West, Lupe Fiasco and Pusha-T (of the Clipse), directed by Hype Williams.

I’m lovin’ the 8-bit concept.

Throwback - Mary J. Blige - “Be Happy”

Wednesday, August 6th, 2008

On November 29, 1994, Uptown Records released Blige’s second album, My Life. Darker, moodier, and slightly less uptempo than its predecessor - What’s the 411? - the set was overseen by Sean “Puffy” Combs (despite his having recently left the label), who co-produced all but one of the albums tracks, and took over as Blige’s manager. Blige co-wrote a large body of the material, basing it on her personal life.

“Be Happy”, the album’s first single, peaked at number 29 and number six on the Hot 100 and R&B singles chart, respectively.

DJ SG Headlining at Red Circle This Saturday

DJ SG at Red Circle August 9, 2008

This coming Saturday, August 9th, 2008, I’ll be headlining at Red Circle, in the Gaslamp, downtown San Diego.

You know, the benefit of having a DJ name of only two letters is the fact that the name looks HUGE when you have to blow it up on a flyer - just thought I gloat for 2 seconds.

Saturday’s party is being brought to you by the awesome dudes Richard Bloom and Raging Productions. I took a gander at the invite list on facebook…. There are some really hot women coming through, so my boys better be in full effect.

And now for some related music: Read the rest of this entry »

I’m Ready to Go Right Now

Friday, August 1st, 2008

I was issued a challenge this week by my good friend Brook. You see, he likes to occasionally issue challenges to me when he decides to show up to my gigs. It keeps me on my toes…

This week is a little interesting. How am I going to pull off his 3-song challenge, I don’t know…

1. Usher - “Trading Places”

2. Digital Underground - “Freaks of the Industry”

3. John Legend - “Green Light” feat. Andre 3000

Where will I have to play these songs, you ask? Read the rest of this entry »

A Throwback to Get Me Through This Hump Day

Wednesday, July 16th, 2008

I feel like I’m having a long week.

I’ve been promoting Thursday like crazy, on top of my typical Friday and Saturday gigs, as well as working on a new AC Lounge mix (not to mention the long overdue Face-Off Pt. 5). Meanwhile, I’ve somehow found the time to still go to school after work and have time to eat every now and then.

Anyway…

Sometimes the best remedy for the humps is some good tunes. This is one of those songs….

Jocelyn Enriquez - Do You Miss Me (Freestyle Mix)

discogs.com

Jocelyn Enriquez holds the distinction of being the first Filipino American to make it in the mainstream music industry. Dubbed as the new “Queen of Freestyle,” Enriquez was the first artist to be signed by Classified Records, a Filipino-owned recording company when it was established in 1993. When Enriquez’s first single became a success, larger recording companies began to take notice. Born and raised in San Francisco, California, Jocelyn Enriquez is the daughter of Filipino parents from Manila and the province of Pangasinan. By late April 1997, Enriquez’s first single “Do You Miss Me?” had placed 49th on the Billboard Top 100 singles chart, 7th in Singapore, and among the top 20 in Canada. Then she had the hit song, “A Little Bit of Ecstasy”. By August 1997. every day in New York City, one could hear “Do You Miss Me?” or “A Little Bit of Ecstasy”.
