Earlier this week it was reported that a shooting in North Park had a occurred, killing an individual who partied Air Conditioned Lounge (my Saturday residency).
San Diego Union Tribune reported:
A man walking with a friend in a North Park alley has died after being shot early Tuesday morning following an altercation outside a bar.
Miguel Leon-Fregoso, 27, of San Diego, died at a hospital at 9:03 a.m., the Medical Examiner’s Office said.
He was at the Air Conditioned bar on 30th Street near Adams Street with a group of friends about 1 a.m. when they had some kind of altercation outside, said San Diego police Capt. Bill Edwards.
Leon-Fregoso and one of the friends were walking north through a nearby alley several minutes later when a man in a small gray pickup, possibly a Toyota, pulled up alongside them, authorities said.
The man got out of the truck and exchanged words with the pair. Police said he fired a shot that struck Leon-Fregoso in the face. He then fired at the other man and missed, got back into the truck and drove off, Edwards said.
The shooter was described as Latino, in his late 20s, about 5 feet 9 to 5 feet 10 inches tall, weighing around 200 pounds, Edwards said.
Police were checking to see if any surveillance cameras at nearby businesses recorded the shooting.
The official police report outlines the crime slightly differently… in that Air Conditioned is not mentioned.
The initial investigation has revealed that Mr. Leon-Fregoso was attending a party with friends at 4600 30th Street. Short after 1:00 a.m., the victim left the party with a male companion. As the two were walking towards their vehicle, they were approached by the suspect who was driving a grey colored Toyota pick-up.
You kind of have to wonder why Air Conditioned was thrown into the mix when it had nothing to do with the murder?
Now, I’m not playing to downplay what happened and where. The shooting definitely happened in the vicinity of Air Conditioned Lounge. North Park has had a reputation of sometimes being a less friendly environment but over the past couple of years it has improved a great deal in lowering its crime rate. I just feel like the media did Air Conditioned an injustice by throwing its name into its story. It simply makes the club bad. The fact that the shooting happened around AC is bad, but now the general public upon hearing “Air Conditioned” will immediately think of the shooting.
That isn’t to say you should be walking down any alleys near AC Lounge, but please believe AC is not where people get shot afterward. Just be careful out there because it can happen anywhere.
Those are my two cents.
